I have had a great time watching the rebroadcasts of last season’s American Idol on Fox Reality Channel. I basically watched the whole season in about a week. Yeah, it seems like a lot to watch but honestly it flew by. I would like to thank TIVO who made recording and watching this season VERY easy. That final 12 was a talented group for sure. I think as far as talent goes that this season was the most talented group of all the seasons. Carrie Underwood is just amazing. It was very impressive that she did not get into the bottom voting group through the whole season. I thought Bo and Constantine were very good and I became fans of theirs. Bo just came across as a really cool laid back guy. Constantine’s performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was amazing. When he said he was doing that song, I had the same reaction as everyone else wondering if that might be a hard song to do. He did it great. There is always a shocker moment each season and that was when Constantine was voted off. You could cut the tension with a knife when the announcement was made. I thought the final three was the right final three with Carrie, Bo, and Vonzelle. That would have been my picks. I did think that Scott and Anthony were there longer than they should have been. Both were good but I thought others were better. Others that I thought should have been lasted longer were Constantine, Nikko, and Jessica. What was with all the girls going home early except for Carrie and Vonzelle? It took at least 3 weeks for a guy to be voted off. I loved the Billboard #1’s night which had Carrie performing an amazing version of Heart’s “Alone”. Some funny moments of the season always seem to revolve around the results show when they split the groups with the top group and the bottom three. They always then leave one person to decide which group he will be in without them announcing which group is the top or bottom. Bo was the best when he just went out and stood in the middle not picking either. That is what I would have done. The other was when they had Constantine and Scott picking which group they were in. One group had Carrie and Bo. That was obviously the group that you’d likely want to be in cause they were untouchable. Both of them went and stood with Carrie and Bo which was funny. That ended up being Constantine’s week being voted off. Mikalah Gordon’s Reality Revealed interview was funny where they discussed Constantine getting voted off. She said “when Constantine was voted off, half of America’s women….. died. It was ridiculous”. The 2 hour finale was a ton of fun with a lot of great group performances and it’s always fun to get all the top 12 back together. Carrie’s finale performance sent chills through me. Great moment. The Reality Revealed segment during the finale was hosted by season 3 runner up Diana DeGarmo as she was on the red carpet doing a ton of interviews for Fox Reality. I think I have to say that this was the best season of American Idol which knocked off season 2 for me. I know I enjoyed it a ton better than I did season 3.
What will Warner Brothers do now that all the Friends seasons are now out on DVD? They will put out more releases of Friends. They are set to release various DVD’s of Friends that revolve around certain storyline plots. There will be a DVD called “The One With All The Birthdays”. It will of course feature just the episodes that involved someone’s birthday. Others set for release are “The One With All The Weddings” and “The One With All The Babies”. This is an attempt to get something out there cheaper to consumers to check out the DVD’s. I like the idea of it. Each DVD contains either 6 or 7 episodes and will be released on March 28th.
Google is now offering videos to download on their website. CBS has partnered with them and I have seen the whole season of Survivor Guatemala on there. It cost $1.99 an episode. They are also showing Twilight Zone episodes along with some Brady Bunch episodes. Only negative is that you can’t download the stuff. You watch it on the site. Google has also worked out a deal with the NBA with recent games being shown on there. So, if you don’t have League Pass and want to see a game, there is a chance it might be available on there. I believe it cost $3.99 for a game? Not positive. They also have some classic games on there too but the earliest one available is from 2000. I Tunes is offering Saturday Night Live clips from past and present available to watch through their service. This downloading shows thing is catching on really quickly after Apple jumped out there and got the ball rolling. Everyone else would be advised to follow suit and get in the game. Apple is still out there in the lead in my opinion especially considering that you can download the shows.
It looks likely that Survivor Palau will be released on DVD as several cast members have said that they have done commentaries for the DVD. Survivor Pearl Islands is set to be released in February and that was a really good season.
Fox has decided to end Malcolm In The Middle and That 70’s Show in May so this will be the last season of each show. It didn’t really surprise me about Malcolm as I didn’t actually know they were still making new episodes of it until I read an article in this week’s TV Guide. The ironic thing was that the quote in there said something along the lines of yes, they are still making new episodes in case you didn’t know since it has been exiled to Friday night. Malcolm is going to return to Sunday nights starting January 29th and be there until the show ends. I was surprised about That 70’s Show. I haven’t really heard how the show has been this year since losing some of it’s original cast members who went on to do other things. Fox is talking to Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher about coming back for the series finale.
Gilmore Girls is promising that we will have a wedding this season but aren’t revealing who’s wedding it will be. The obvious is Lorelei and Luke since they are engaged and planning the wedding but the producers won’t say it for sure. That is my hope and I really hope that they wouldn’t throw a twist together by getting Rory and Logan back together and marrying them at the end of the season. That would be really annoying as Logan’s character is irritating. Jess always annoyed me but Logan makes me somehow miss that character being around. ha ha. Rory has now moved back in with Paris so that means that we get more Paris than we were getting earlier in the season. That is a good thing as I think Paris Gellar is one of the best characters on TV right now.
The WB has given an official reason for the cancellation of 7th Heaven. They said at the Television Critics Association tour this week that the show was just too expensive to make and that they were taking a big loss on it. It is still the most watched show on the WB although Gilmore Girls and Smallville are right there with it. The show doesn’t do well with repeats but most shows don’t do well with repeats. The WB and Spelling are both disappointed that they couldn’t come up with something to keep it going but there is still talk of a possibility of a spinoff. I’ll also continue my talk of that I’m still waiting for that Angel spinoff that the WB has been talking about for years. Speaking of the show, Beverley Mitchell who plays Lucy is now engaged to be married.
Fox also made some news this week at the same previously discussed tour talking about their shows. They got hammered with questions about Arrested Development asking what the fate was of the show. They said that the show was “highly unlikely” to come back. They still have yet to cancel the show which would allow other networks to jump on it. They got many questions about that and you just get the feeling that they are afraid to let it go and have another network succeed with it. They also are getting questioned on letting that go along with the cancellations of Malcolm and That 70’s Show with what sitcoms they are going to have without them. Reunion was also discussed by the Fox executive. There was no chance of them bringing it back. Kristen from E Online and also the Fox people are saying that it isn’t likely that another network will pick it up. With that being said, they revealed who the killer was going to be on the show that killed Samantha. It’s hard to tell if this is a spoiler or not cause I guess there is always a chance it could come back but I highly doubt it. So, here it is for those who want to know. If you don’t want to know, STOP READING NOW. I would also like to say that I called this!! As I was watching the last episode that did air, I thought of this possibility. The killer was going to be Amy, who was Samantha and Will’s daughter. The producers were also considering going a different direction with who the killer was going to be. Kristen from E Online is saying that she has also got some more news from the show that she will tell soon such as how Craig ended up in the wheelchair. The executive got a ton of comments about how they keep canceling shows early and leaving fans hanging such as with Reunion and how this could turn off fans. I know it has turned me off on Fox even more.
Fox has decided to air the final 4 episodes of the season of Arrested Development It will air in a 2 hour block on Friday February 10th. All 4 episodes will air that night. Do you know what night that is on programming wise? It is going to go up against the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on NBC. Ouch. Does Fox just do these things on purpose? On the bright side for any of you that are fans of the show, the episodes are at least going to air now. This means the episode that features the Bateman TV reunion with Jason and sister Justine guest starring will now air. That will put the show at 13 episodes for this season which is what Fox ordered. ABC also appears to be interested in the show along with Showtime should Fox cancel it.
Reruns of 8 Simple Rules are now airing on afternoon WB programming. ER kicks off the WB programming airing 3 to 4pm. 8 Simple Rules is on from 4-5pm with back to back episodes. I’ve been watching it and am laughing just as hard at it as I did the first time around.
Fox’s new season of American Idol opened with monster numbers on Tuesday night. The show opened with a 17.6 rating in its first hour but jumped to a 21.0 in the second hour. It was the second highest rated Idol show ever trailing only the second season finale of Ruben and Clay.
I finished the Firefly box set but have yet to watch the Serenity movie. I have bought it but have yet to watch it. Since I have so much in this this week already, I figured I’d just save this till next week to discuss the show some more and maybe I’ll have the movie watched by then too.
Ron Howard’s daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, is in negotiations to play Gwen Stacy in Spider Man 3.
Steve Martin is set to host Saturday Night Live on February 4th. He already holds the record for hosting the show the most times out of anyone but he will add to it with February 4th being the 14th time that he has been a host.
Nielsen ratings have now started counting DVR’s to make up ratings numbers. This just started a few weeks ago.
That’s all I have for you this week.
