What happened to that much talked about Dawson’s Creek reboot project from a few years ago? When the 25th anniversary happened back in 2023, there was buzz on a project in the works being floated around but then the news on it just went seemingly quiet. Dylan Neal posted on his Instagram this week about that project so it was good to hear the followup on what happened. He posted on his IG @dylanjneal
“As some of you may know, there was a Dawson’s Creek cast reunion this weekend in New York City, in support of @vanderjames battle with cancer, and to raise money and awareness for early detection.
This is the first big reunion since celebrating the shows 15 year anniversary back in 2018, and of course, the usual reboot/spinoff questions are flying around. In this @usweekly article, @actorkerrsmith talks about the spinoff that Beck and I worked on several years ago, that got quite a bit of attention.
After the 2018 reunion and all the reboot/spinoff articles, I put on my writer/producer hat and wondered how such a vehicle might look, knowing Josh had made it very clear he’s not interested in any reboot. It occurred to me that Jack and Doug’s adoption of Jen’s baby in the finale, Amy (now 15), provided a natural launching pad for some of the old cast to get back together and introduce a new younger cast who are about to enter Capeside High, just like in the original pilot.
With Kevin Williamson’s blessing (and no interest in returning either), Beck delivered an outstanding script that got a lot of attention around town. One or two former exec producer/writers even complimented how great the script was. Several production companies jumped at it over several years and were willing to fund it, we even had the CW very interested back in ’22. Sony however, who owns the IP, just wouldn’t get on board at each turn. I think they felt if it didn’t include Dawson, Pacey and Joey back as a triangle, they weren’t interested. The script had a number of the old gang attached and we even could have had James and Katie join if interested (mid-life crisis and regrets anyone?) but without Sony’s permission, it kept getting stalled.
Anyway, I thought I should explain some of the headlines that may be out there after this reunion. My thoughts are with James and his beautiful family this weekend. Consider giving him a follow as he gives some very wise and beautiful messages about family and life on his Instagram feed. We could all use a little kindness and love these days.”
