Sad news out of the entertainment world today as James Van Der Beek passed away after his battle with cancer. I was out for a walk at the time and had just finished when I looked at my phone and saw a breaking news alert with his name. My first thought was this probably isn’t something good and it wasn’t. Definitely a took my breath moment when I read the headline. The family put out this statement: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
A Go Fund Me has been set up for the family at this link https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-james-van-der-beeks-family to help the family with their expenses. The Go Fund Me page says: “James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children. Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care. In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead. Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education. Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”
I grew up as a Dawson’s Creek fan and the show remains one of my all time top ten favorite shows. Back in 1998, I had seen the heavy promotion on TV and in magazines for this new show coming to The WB. I watched the first episode and was immediately hooked. It was immediate appointment TV. This show still means a whole lot to me. James and the whole show was such an important part of defining a generation. Such a talented and humble actor. He also went over to another one of my top ten all time favorite shows, One Tree Hill, where he played the anti Dawson. Could not be more opposite of Dawson and he was so good in that role as well. The outpouring of messages today online have been so powerful to read with so many paying tribute to their friend and loved one.
