Wow! Just wow! Napheesa Collier just put out a statement absolutely ripping WNBA leadership and it is well worth the watch.
Napheesa talked about a conversation she had with commissioner Cathy Engelbert “I also asked how she planned to fix the fact that players like Caitlin, Angel, and Paige, who are clearly driving massive revenue for the league, are making so little for their first four years. Her response was that ‘Caitlin should be grateful she makes 16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn’t make anything’. In that same conversation, she told me that ‘players should be on their knees thanking their lucky stars for the media rights deals that I got them.'”
That is a bold statement from the league commissioner on Caitlin Clark. There has been a lot of issues for the league including the officiating. I watch so many games and am just amazed at how bad the officiating consistently is. Players get injured often. This including the injury to Napheesa the other night at the end of the game. Paige Bueckers earlier this year was asked about what her biggest adjustment to the WNBA was and she said it was how physical it was and what you could get away with. She talked in college about how she was taught by Geno to play defense without putting hands on a player and then she got into the WNBA and it’s so completely opposite of what you can do.
Napheesa added: “we have the best fans in the world, the best players in the world, but the worst leadership in the world”.
