Tonight is going to be one of the most interesting ratings nights in recent memory. All the powerhouse shows from each network went head to head tonight. CBS had Survivor. Fox had American Idol. ABC had the Dancing With The Stars finale. NBC had their highest rated event, figure skating, on their Olympic coverage. It will be VERY interesting to see what the numbers are tonight.
I thought it might be fun to review the Back To The Future Trilogy DVD box set. I have had this for a long time but thought I’d review it for anyone that hasn’t seen this great set. It’s no secret that the Back To The Future Trilogy is my favorite set of movies ever. I know this cause when this DVD set came out in December of 2002, I had about 6 of you try to buy me this thing for Christmas that year. ha ha. I kid you not either when I say that many people. 2 of you had the right idea though when one was going to buy it and the other said that they guaranteed that I had it already and had gotten it the morning it was released. He was right!! Luckily, no one bought it for me though. I had been following 5 years of rumors and promises of this set coming to life before it finally happened. As far as the movies themselves, I saw all 3 of them at the theaters so I think that is a cool thing. I remember that it was just me and my mom in the theater when we saw the first Back To The Future as the movie had been out for a while by the time we had seen it. So, it was like our own private showing of it. I remember mom having to tell me why some things were funny with the 50’s references and with me being a kid, there were jokes going over my head. When we saw the next 2 films in the theaters, we went a lot earlier in it’s showings as I was very excited to see the sequels and I had one friend go with us to Part 2 and a different friend go with us to Part 3. If I was to count up how many times I’ve seen these movies, I’m sure it would be some sick number considering these movies are around 20 years old. Usually if I see them on TV, I’ll end up watching it. Anyway, there is a little background and now to the DVD’s. You can only buy the movies in the set and not as separate movies. The price though is very good on them. You can either buy them in widescreen (that’s me) or full screen formats. The movies look amazing on DVD and they did a great job with them. It is loaded with extras including deleted scenes from all 3 movies. Part 3 only has 1 deleted scene but Parts 1 & 2 are loaded with extra scenes. There are featurettes on all 3 movies including commentary on all 3 movies. There is also an audio Q&A that you can watch with the film where Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale taped this at a college. It is very good and goes for around an hour and they just field questions from the audience about the movies and it wasn’t long ago that this was taped. There are outtakes on all 3 movies which are very funny. All the movie trailers are on there and are really fun to watch. The Power Of Love and Double Back music videos are on the set. Other cool things on it are a visual effects extra where they show how they did a few of the scenes. There are also features on how they designed the Delorean, came up with the idea of how time travel would work in the movie, and other interesting things. I thought I would throw in some notes from the movie that you might not know about it. Back To The Future was never supposed to be more than one movie and sequels were never on the agenda until the success of the first movie. Zemeckis says that this is obvious cause if he knew there would be more movies that he never would have put Jennifer in the car at the end of Part 1 as it really messed with their possibilities on what to do with the rest of the story. Crispin Glover who played George McFly in Part 1 did not appear in the sequels as he was asking for way too much money to do the films and the producers were not about to give it to him. The original plan for Part 2 was for old Biff to give the almanac to his younger self in 1967 but they ended up going back with 1955 again. There is a scene in Part 2 when Biff gets back to 2015 after giving his younger self the almanac that he is seen slumping to the ground. There is a deleted scene on the DVD where he disappears like Marty was doing in Part 1 in 1955 as he faded from existence. It was played when they screened the movie the first time and it seemed to confuse the audience so they cut it. As far as what happened to Biff, there are many options that they say could have happened. When he got back and altered his past, something may have happened to where Biff didn’t exist in 2015 in this new reality. The producers joke that they think Lorraine may have shot him around 1990. So, needless to say that if you are a fan of this series of movies, you need to get this DVD set. You won’t be disappointed!! I know I wasn’t disappointed!! I would love to see the movies get re-released in theatres for the 20 year anniversary as are many fans but I doubt that would happen. I would be in line at the theatres quickly if that were to happen!!
This past weekend was NBA All Star Weekend. It was a good weekend to stay in weather wise with all the snow. The All Star Game was a fun one and I thought it was a lot more entertaining than last year’s game. The East came back from a 17 point halftime deficit to win the game. Funniest moment of the whole game was Shaq intentionally missing the free throw by firing the ball off the backboard and then running to dunk it back in. The refs waved it off as a violation of course but it was hilarious and a typical Shaq funny All Star moment. I was laughing for about 5 minutes after that happened. It’s always fun watching him run the point too. All Star Saturday Night was just kind of so so this year. Nothing really that exciting. The dunk contest was pretty decent but had way too many missed dunks in it. Last year’s was a lot more exciting.
Bon Jovi performed during the Daytona 500 pre show on NBC and put on a great show. They performed “It’s My Life” and “Have A Nice Day”. They then brought Sugarland out to perform the next song. “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.” Carrie Underwood performed “Some Hearts” during halftime of the NBA All Star Game and was amazing. Destiny’s Child performed the national anthem at the All Star Game. Here is my question. Didn’t Destiny’s Child retire like a year ago as a group??!! I’ve heard of various promotions of last performances only for them to have another last performance and then reunions. ha ha.
Voting is underway on this season’s American Idol. I’m still sticking to my thoughts on that a girl will win this season especially after what I’ve seen this week. The girls are just better overall than the guys. I am backing Kellie Pickler. That is where my vote is going and who I did vote for this week. How can you not like her? She’s got a good voice and is just someone that you genuinely want to see do well. After watching Paris Bennett again this week, my first thought was that she is going to be hard to beat. She had a great performance. The judges like her and she has a very likable personality. Paris Bennett, Lisa Tucker, and Katherine McPhee are going to be very hard to beat and I expect them to get to the later rounds and actually expect one of those three to win it. Tonight’s show saw the first four people eliminated. Becky O’Donahue, Bobby Bennett, Stevie Scott, and Patrick Hall went home tonight. Not really any surprises in there except that I didn’t Becky to go home that early. Idol continues to put a beating on the Olympics. Tuesday’s show saw Idol get a 16.1 in the first hour and went up to a 17.5 in the second hour. The Olympics got a 12.6 in the first hour and a 15.0 in the second hour. Skating helped the ratings for the Olympics that night. Wednesday night saw Idol get a 17.1 in the first hour and jump to a 19.1 in the second hour. The Olympics had a 8.6 in the first hour and jumped to a 9.8 in the second hour.
Sticking with the Idol theme. If you are a fan of the show, I recommend checking out the official American Idol magazine. I picked up the latest issue and it is worth checking out. They keep you up to date on former Idol contestants and talk about the current season.
Sticking with the Idol theme again. The bloggers in Nashville are getting some blog mileage out of seeing Carrie Underwood taping her newest video “Don’t Forget To Remember Me”. One blogger had no clue on who she was but did find out. The producers of the video had her on the phone in a phone booth as they taped a shot for the video. The guy did have a camera with him and she smiled for his camera as he took a picture as she held the phone waiting for the next shot. The guy then joked in his blog that the phone booth was a prop in case anyone went downtown trying to find the phone booth. Another blogger commented how his work building was used in the video. His work day consisted of him and everyone else running around trying to get a view of the making of the video. He didn’t know much about Carrie other than her name but did find it exciting that his building was going to used in the video. From what I’ve read about the video, it sounds like it is going to be a good one.
I got a great surprise in the mail late last week. After getting the “delayed” postcard, I then got my Friends collectors box in the same week. The box is very nice and is heavier than it looks.
The first season of Joey will be released on DVD on May 30th. It will have 24 episodes on it.
I just saw this commercial as I was typing this up and thought, hey, I’ll throw this in. I really like that Diet Coke commercial where everyone is skating around with “Starry Eyed Surprise” playing in the background. It’s an older commercial but it is still getting played. That is just a fun commercial!!!
The new Jordan brand commercial aired over the NBA All Star Weekend. This was a clever idea as they had kids and teenagers playing basketball in various situations whether it is organized basketball or pick up basketball. Each one was reenacting a Jordan move or Jordan expression from his career. How did I know this right away? I recognized the first shot of the commercial. It’s pathetic cause I can almost tell you what every play is from in his career. ha ha. The commercial ends showing Michael Jordan standing off to the side watching the game. This was one of the best Jordan brand commercials that I’ve seen in a while.
I’m obviously pulling for WWE star Stacy Keibler in tonight’s Dancing With The Stars finale. I personally think that with the success that she has had with the show that she is done with wrestling full time. I think we’ll see her show up from time to time on WWE programming but that is it. I say good for her as she deserves the success.
In the “wow that was fast” moment of the week, UPN has already canceled Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari’s show “Get This Party Started” after two episodes.
