Well now. Not many people were talking about that new show “Ugly Betty” on ABC. It premiered to the biggest rating of a new show this year. It actually beat Survivor in the ratings numbers. Although, Survivor had more viewers in the target demographic of 18-49. ABC is suddenly a player in the Thursday night battle. CBS just barely beat ABC for the overall night. CSI and Grey’s Anatomy were neck and neck on that night with Grey’s Anatomy getting a 14.9 and CSI getting a 14.1. CSI did have more total viewers though when you get into the shares. At 9pm, CBS and NBC were neck and neck as ER and Shark had a 9.5. ABC’s Six Degrees had a 7.1 in the same 9pm hour. Thursday night is going to be fun to watch ratings wise.
The CW is already shuffling some of its lineup. 7th Heaven is moving to Sundays along with Runaway. The Sunday programming will be moving to Monday night. The comedies did not do so well on Sunday night ratings wise. If I’m not mistaken, I think this will be the first time that 7th Heaven has been moved from its Sunday night time slot. I’m not so sure that is a wise move especially when the 7th Heaven audience has been used to watching that show in that time slot for 10 years now.
More ratings from the CW. The season premiere of Smallville had a 2.9 while the season premiere of Supernatural got a 2.2. Gilmore Girls got a 3.3 this week. Veronica Mars premiered with a 2.1 which was just kind of a so so number but the network seems happy with it as it held its lead-in audience more than the show did last year with America’s Top Model. It did hold on to 63% of the Gilmore audience which is good.
Season 1 of American Idol is now airing on WGN every Sunday night.
The release date for Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby on DVD is December 12th. Extras on the set include commentary, deleted and extended scenes, featurettes, character interviews, gag reel, and others.
Now, on to my favorite back to back combo of TV shows with Gilmore and Veronica Mars on Tuesday nights on CW. Week 2 of the Gilmore report with the new writers. This week’s episode of Gilmore definitely seemed to have a different feel than last week’s episode. The flow of the show and the dialogue for sure felt different this week. It definitely seemed noticeable to me that there were different writers. Noteworthy things from this episode. The show opened from the close of last week’s show with Luke leaving after hearing about Lorelei and Christopher. He showed up at Christopher’s door, punched him, and left. Really funny. Other notes. Lane is pregnant. The name of the episode was “that’s what you get for making whoopee”. Funny stories in it as Lane hated the experience with her new husband Zack and sees why her mom always said that sex was bad. Mini-Luke was funny with Kirk deciding to open up his own outside diner across from Luke’s. Kirk had Luke looking clothes on complete with backwards ball cap. On to Veronica Mars, I was so excited to be caught up with present day with this show. The opening clip with Veronica in class figuring out the mystery in 6 minutes shattering the record by 10 minutes was very funny. This season will focus early on about something that occurred last season when Veronica was visiting the college. Someone was raping girls and then shaving their heads. Well, Veronica is now attending that same college and it is still happening. It involved some of the sororities. Mac’s roommate was shown at the end of the episode and had just had it happen to her. In a separate storyline although you never know with this show, Kendall was killed toward the end of the episode. I wasn’t crazy about the new remix of the theme song at first but it is growing on me. In a combined note, did you catch the mentions of Battlestar Gallactica references in both shows? The writers were showing some love at that show for sure.
NBC learned a lesson that if you are looking to premiere a show that you might want to put it somewhere besides against Dancing With The Stars and NCIS. Friday Night Lights struggled going up against those two shows. It did however beat the MLB Playoffs on Fox. I haven’t heard a lot about Friday Night Lights as far as reviews but the promos of it looked like it could be a good show.
I finally got to watch the first episode of the new CBS show, The Class. If you don’t know the story, it revolves around a group that was in 3rd grade together. One member of the class, Ethan, decides to throw his girlfriend a surprise party and invites all of the classmates from 3rd grade. They are mostly strangers now. Most of them show up and the surprise happens. The girlfriend shows up and then ends up breaking up with the guy during the party. She doesn’t like all the surprises and all that he does for her. I thought the premiere was ok. I wasn’t REALLY crazy about it but I’m going to watch a few more episodes to see how I like it. I did laugh out loud at it several times.
If you didn’t know, X3 hit DVD shelves this week. You can either buy the movie separate or as a set with the other two movies. I’ve seen X3 and really liked it even after not seeing the other two. Reports are coming out of the early DVD sales of the movie and they are big. One report has X3 selling 2.6 million DVD’s on the first day. It is the highest selling October debut ever for a DVD.
Seinfeld won the Best Of Show award at the recent TV DVD Awards for the season 5 and 6 box sets. The judges were very impressed with all the bonus features and involvement from the cast and producers of the show. I’ll again say that Seinfeld is the best TV on DVD release as they put a TON of work into them giving you plenty more to watch besides just the episodes. They are amazing box sets.
Kelly Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos have apparently got a deal with the CW Network for a new comedy that is going to be somewhat based on their experiences with soap opera TV. CW has given a script commitment to it.

CBS is switching time slots of How I Met Your Mother and The Class. This goes into effect this Monday. The ratings for How I Met Your Mother are up from last year’s average. Great news cause this is a really good show. The Class hasn’t done as well ratings wise as to what people were expecting.
CBS’s Evening News has now fallen to third place in the ratings. NBC leads with ABC in second place.

Fox is launching some On Demand programming for viewers that aren’t interested in the baseball playoffs. If you watch Fox, you know that shows are preempted for the month during the playoffs. Previously aired episodes of Prison Break, Bones, The Loop, Justice, Standoff, Vanished, Talk Show With Spike Feresten, and Till Death will be on the Fox On Demand. Fox is going to be advertising this On Demand service a good amount during the playoffs.
CBS has ordered another season of The Amazing Race. The show is doing solid numbers on its new night on Sunday night.
