Tom Wilson recently appeared on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum talking about his career, Back To Future, comedy, and so much more. When Michael asked him about what connects people to Back To The Future, Tom had his take on it saying “Back to the Future is a wonderful movie and Michael is fantastic.. And Chris Lloyd is fantastic, and Lea is fantastic.
I actually don’t think the movie is about getting the kid in the car back to the future. I think the movie is about ‘No Biff, You leave her alone’. I think that’s the core of the movie.
It’s him standing up for himself and saying no.
This isn’t gonna happen. Then he hits Biff, everything changes. And now, of course, we’re in a Hollywood movie.
We have to go in the car and has to get him back, and then everything’s changed with his family. And all that stuff happens, and the lightning and everything. A lot of fun.
But the meaning of the movie is stand up for yourself. When it counts.
That’s my take on it.
And that’s my take on why it strikes people so hard. Why people love it so much. Because it’s two things.
Yes, it’s a fun, action adventure with a car that travels through space and everything, and the question, what if you went in a time machine and met your parents? Would you like them? So it’s that, but it’s also… this character, George McFly, that has to learn and stand up for himself..
Which is family, which is all of those deep relationships between Doc Brown and Marty, a crazy doctor and his friend.”
